Supporting Our Worship Experience

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are a variety of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. – 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Have you ever wondered who decorates the sanctuary for worship each week? Have you noticed the awesome banners on the walls and wondered where they come from and how they get up there? Or how the colors change on the pulpit and the altar sometimes and then change again later?

If so, I would like to introduce you to the Worship Support Committee, formally the Worship Committee. For years and years, without anyone really being aware of it, Vicki Shaw and her team on the Worship Committee cleaned the sanctuary, dressed the altar each week, and changed the paraments and banners when needed. The Worship Committee, with help from the Trustees, also has led the Hanging of the Greens every year as we decorate for the season just before Advent begins. Due to various changes in the committee’s makeup and some health challenges thrown in along the way, those duties have been passed to the new group of folks who make up our Worship Support Committee.

Marilyn Miller and Sharon Strawn have been wonderful at coming up with new decoration ideas and with Jason Anderson’s incredible graphic design talents and the unwavering dedication of Amy Hicks and Phil Harris to dress the altar and the pulpit and drape the cross when appropriate, I think we have been pretty darn successful at putting together a sanctuary each week that is beautiful and really provides the right setting for us to enter into the worship of God.

We would love to have some new folks join our small but mighty Worship Support team. A fresh set of eyes, energies, and ideas is always welcome! Do you like to decorate? Do you have some time that you can dedicate to the whole congregation by helping us come up with new and exciting ideas for dressing the sanctuary? This would be a great way to help your church and not take up great amounts of time. Contact me at [email protected] if you are interested. We would love to have you. God bless!
