Powered by the Holy Spirit, 'Rethink Church' serves as a catalyst that moves the denomination, and those we hope to reach, into dialogue -- and ultimately, into transformative, collaborative action. What if church were a verb? What would it look like? What if there were 10,000 doors into church? Watch the video by clicking here. Then send your thoughts and ideas to rethink@parkerumc.org

Prayer - Daily Offices - Home

As I mentioned in the sermon on Feb. 25th, Kathleen Flood has come up with a way to observe the 7 offices of prayer during the day from the Benedictines in a way that is possible when you do not live in a monastery. The purpose of these is to bring us back into contact and conversation with God throughout the day. The Latin name for the office is followed by the times. Click here for the 7 offices and the times.
You might try this out over Lent. Also you might try the empty chair that I mentioned. Let me know if either helps your prayer life.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Mike

Our Vision: "INSPIRING THROUGH CHRIST THE LOVE OF GOD AND NEIGHBOR."

11805 S. Pine Drive, Parker, CO 80134 OFC 303 841-3979, FAX 303-805-8955 EMAIL office@parkerumc.org

Worship Services Times - Communion is served on the 1st Sunday of the month at all services and at 9:10am on the rest of the Sundays in the month
Our 8:00 am Worship uses a traditional liturgy with traditional hymns and music led by the Good News Choir to help us center our worship experience. Children are encouraged to participate in the Children's Church after the Children's Sermon during this service.
Our 9:30 am Worship is more informal with the same hymns as the 8am and fewer parts of the regular United Methodist liturgy. This worship has a variety of musical styles led by our choir. Our 11:00 am Worship, called iWorship, is a contemporary service experience led by a praise band singing lots of celebration music.

In all three services the sermon is based on the same scriptures with a slight variation in style. We hope you will find that one of these three services enhances your sense of God's presence as you worship.

Centered about 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, this quake has caused enormous damage and loss of life. The death toll is mounting. Hundreds of thousands are feared dead. The suffering of the injured is beyond comprehension, and compounded by the collapse of medical facilities. Buildings were destroyed . . . homes, churches, schools, hospitals, businesses, government facilities. The country is in ruins, with no electricity and no water in Port-au-Prince. As many as 3 million survivors need basic supplies, medical attention, food, water and emergency shelter. The homeless and hurting urgently need help. Your help is needed! Your gift today will help UMCOR respond with emergency assistance as quickly as possible, including the provision of 3 cargo containers of health kits. Please give generously to speed relief and recovery efforts. Our prayers are with the children and families who are hurting as a result of this devastation. We are also compelled to share with you our concern for UMCOR's deputy general secretary, Sam Dixon, and colleagues traveling with him in Haiti when the earthquake hit. As of this morning, we have received word that the team has been located in the rubble of the Hotel Montana and they are in the process of being rescued. Your prayers are sincerely appreciated. We are not seeking volunteers to go to Haiti at this time, but your generous response is urgently needed to help get relief supplies to Haiti. Again, please give generously today. You can give online; or call 1-212-870-3951 to give by phone; or mail your check to UMCOR, 475 Riverside Drive, Room 1500, New York, NY 10115. UMCOR Please GIVE to provide health kits and other relief supplies to the people of Haiti. Volunteer-in-missions teams make a big difference in Haiti. However, in the weeks immediately following this disaster, only emergency responders and specially trained volunteers will be allowed to enter the area. This is because of health concerns due to structural damage and water-borne illness, as well as lack of infrastructure to host volunteers.

HEALTH KITS URGENTLY NEEDED BY UMCOR FOR HAITI - UMCOR Mission Updates

HEALTH KITS URGENTLY NEEDED BY UMCOR FOR HAITI (1/21/2010)

COLLECTION BOX IS IN THE NARTHEX

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) urgently needs health kits for distribution in Haiti.

All items included in kits must be NEW items.
Since strict rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested items-nothing more.

Place these items inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag and put in the drop box in the Narthex.

UMCOR Health Kit

1 hand towel (15" x 25" up to 17" x 27", No kitchen towels)
1 washcloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, No child-size brushes)
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
$1.00 to purchase toothpaste **(NOTE: UMCOR is purchasing toothpaste in bulk to be added to health kits before shipping to ensure that the product does not expire before they are sent.)

All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Do NOT include any personal notes, money or additional materials in the kits. These things must be painstakingly removed and will delay the shipment.

Your giving to Haiti Relief has been outstanding! Over $4100 was given last week and is on its way to UMCOR. Let’s not stop now!

God’s peace,

Mel

LEAVING YOUR CHILD IN THE NURSERY - Nursery

1. Please label your child's diaper bags or any other belongings at the table that's located at the entrance of the nursery. A nursery staff member will fill out a nametag at the counter with a corresponding pager number and any other important information.

2. Please be assured that a staff member will page you if your child has been crying for 10 minutes. If you want to be paged sooner or later please let an adult staff member know.

3. For any first time visitor or any guardian who has a child with separation anxiety please feel free to accompany your child into the nursery.

4. If your child has any allergies or special needs please notify an adult staff member. Nursery only provides goldfish, cheerios, and fruit loops to children for snack.

5. At our PUMC Nursery we strive to provide a healthy environment for your child. In order to do so, please do not bring your child in if they have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea within the previous 24 hours, any symptoms of childhood disease such as scarlet fever, measles, mumps, chicken pox, and whooping cough, runny nose with any colored discharge, sore throat until 24 hours after treatment, any unexplained rash, skin infection, pink eye or other eye infection, and head lice.

6. All classes have an end time and nursery expects that a guardian should arrive to pick their child up within ten minutes after the class end time.

7. During pick up time an adult staff member will not dismiss a child until the corresponding pager is returned for safety reasons.

8. Children need to arrive at the nursery with clean hands, face, and clean diapers. This is needed to maintain a healthy environment.

9. All members of all classes who use the nursery should include the Nursery Childcare Minister on their class email list for any changes or cancellations in the meeting times.

10. If you are in a class and your child becomes ill or for some reason you cannot attend your class please immediately call or email the Nursery Childcare Minister.

Every September and January we are asking that each family who uses the nursery and childcare at anytime other than Sunday morning worship fills out a registration form and corresponding registration fee (fee payment information is on the registration form).

CHECK OUT OUR PRETEEN GROUP!!!

This is a fun and exciting group for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders! Through September to April we meet twice a month on Friday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00. Usually during the summer we meet once a month for BBQ and volleyball. During our meetings we start with some yummy dinner and then move on to discussion time. This is a time that the preteens are able to ask questions and get help with anything that is bothering them. We also talk about stories in the bible and start to learn about God's love and grace for each one of us. After discussion we have anything from games and crafts to creepy crawly visitors! Friends are always welcome to come!! If you have any questions about our group please contact Julianna at julianna@parkerumc.org.

Mission of the Month - "Mission of the Month"

Each Month Parker UMC highlights a Mission of the Month. The list is updated each year in November or December, so if you have a passion for a particular mission or ministry, you can submit it to the Missions Committee, Frank Hill and Shari Quackenbush - co chairs. To be on the list, there must be an advocate for that mission who coordinates the monthly activities: there is a speaker who introduces the Mission on the last Sunday of the preceding month, and update the Mission Bulletin Board and Kiosk.

All funds designated to a Mission goes directly to that Mission. No General Budget Funds are used to support Missions.

In 2010 our Missions of the Month are below. Click on each for a description or some current Information.

January: Missionaries and Wycliff Bible Translators Kim & Dusty Hill

February: DENUM Food Bank

March: Heifer Project

April: Russia initiative

May - December - will be confirmed at the next Mission Meeting, which is the 1st Wednesday of each Month.

Subject: Hill's February Prayer Update Email Dear Praying Friends, We're writing you from Denver, having a great time back in the Rockies, but sorry that our time here has gone so quickly. We arrived in Denver after Christmas and moved into a small condominium. Our schedule has been so busy with speaking engagements, meeting with friends, and taking care of the to-do list that it's been nice to unwind in a place of our own. We've definitely had some highlights in Colorado. We've been able to spend lots of time with our family here, including our new niece Bella. Jack has had fun playing in the snow and learning how to sled and make snow angels, although getting into all the warm gear isn't always so pleasant. Tessa's had fun in a local preschool two mornings a week which we hope will help prepare all of us for our journey into home schooling back in Tanzania. We had a mini-vacation to Breckenridge, and neither of us fell while skiing for the first time in 4 years! Mostly, we're thankful for all the encouragement we have received from everyone here who has been so supportive of and interested in our lives and ministry in Tanzania. Kidisms: Tessa, while trying to eat crumbly pancakes: "These pancakes are not working for me. I'll drink the syrup." Jack, during a church presentation while Dusty was talking into the microphone about how we train nationals: "Train!! Choo choo choo!" Schedule for February: February 13: leave Denver February 15-23: Dallas for missions conference February 23 – March 7: Travel to OK, MO, WI, MN, SD, WY, and back to CO to visit supporters and friends Prayer Requests: Travel.
Pine Ridge Mission Team 2008 7/6/08 - 2010 Missions Ministry Team

Hello from Pine Ridge!

The adult mission team left Parker Saturday morning with Pastor Terri blessing the team and praying for safe passage. We had a great trip up and pulled into Pine Ridge at 3:30 after braving 104 degree heat across most of Nebraska.

It is good to return. Pulling into Pine Ridge I was struck by how little has changed on first appearances from my first trip here six years ago. Big Bat's, the Retreat Center, the churchs and Sioux Nation, our local grocery and hardware store, seemed just as they had in 2002. But nothing remains the same and as we pulled into the Retreat Center itself I noticed a brand new sign outside the center -- a sign our team had been planning on fixing for years. While another team did the work, PUMC's adult mission team helped provide some of the funding. But the biggest change for us this year is the absence of Larry Peterson -- that wonderful servant of God who recently retired. The welcome we received, however, from our new hosts - Karen and Paul - was just as warm as any we received while Larry was here.

After settling in and greeting some old friends we left to attend the July 4th pow-wow at Batesland. While the grand entry, dancing, and drumming groups were wonderful it is the honoring ceremonies that for me are the most unforgettable. Families honor their children, military members and other family members in ways that touch the heart. The most memorable was the ceremony in which young men and women receive their first eagle feather and Lakota name -- a coming of age celebration.

After watching the dancing we moved to a large tepee where Kelly Looking Horse shared some Lakota history and helped us make dream catchers while the sounds of the drums and singers played in the background. All in all, a wonderful way to end our first day on the rez.

God's blessing on all of our church family in Parker.

Grace and peace,

Ken Smith for the Team

The Douglas County Young Marines are teaming up with OperationDVD to collect new and used DVDs to distribute to our local troops being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. The DVDs distributed to the troops may be the only safe form of entertainment they enjoy during their deployment.

To date, the unit has collected and shipped 2,300+ DVDs to OperationDVD's distribution center, but now the effort is coming home, locally, to Denver! New and used DVDs are needed for our troops right here in Colorado!

We have units deploying soon from Buckley Air Force Base and Ft. Carson. Please show your support of the brave men and women of our armed forces by donating!

"Children Titles" donated will be distributed to the Servicemen's families through the Family Readiness Group.

Please donate your DVDs in the specially marked OperationDVD box located in the Narthex.
