URGENTLY NEEDED "WELCOME FAMILY \' FOR CHINESE HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENT SEVERAL WEEKS STARTING - Home

The Laurasian Institution (www.laurasian.org) is desperately looking for a warm, welcoming family to host a Chinese International Exchange student for several weeks prior to school start-up. The student arrives in Denver on August 14, 2010. We need a caring family, to acclimate the student to Denver (Ponderosa High School, preferably) and provide guidance to the American Culture. The Laurasian Institution strives to provide leaning environments in which people of different countries collaborate toward quality and meaning through international education.

****Families need not be two parent families nor have high school aged children of their own. Please contact me as soon as possible for more information regarding this amazing opportunity.

Powered by the Holy Spirit, 'Rethink Church' serves as a catalyst that moves the denomination, and those we hope to reach, into dialogue -- and ultimately, into transformative, collaborative action. What if church were a verb? What would it look like? What if there were 10,000 doors into church? Watch the video by clicking here. Then send your thoughts and ideas to rethink@parkerumc.org

As I mentioned in the sermon on Feb. 25th, Kathleen Flood has come up with a way to observe the 7 offices of prayer during the day from the Benedictines in a way that is possible when you do not live in a monastery. The purpose of these is to bring us back into contact and conversation with God throughout the day. The Latin name for the office is followed by the times. Click here for the 7 offices and the times.
You might try this out over Lent. Also you might try the empty chair that I mentioned. Let me know if either helps your prayer life.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Mike

Our Vision: "INSPIRING THROUGH CHRIST THE LOVE OF GOD AND NEIGHBOR."

11805 S. Pine Drive, Parker, CO 80134 OFC 303 841-3979, FAX 303-805-8955 EMAIL office@parkerumc.org

Worship Services Times - Communion is served on the 1st Sunday of the month at all services and at 9:10am on the rest of the Sundays in the month
Our 8:00 am Worship uses a traditional liturgy with traditional hymns and music led by the Good News Choir to help us center our worship experience. Children are encouraged to participate in the Children's Church after the Children's Sermon during this service.
Our 9:30 am Worship is more informal with the same hymns as the 8am and fewer parts of the regular United Methodist liturgy. This worship has a variety of musical styles led by our choir. Our 11:00 am Worship, called iWorship, is a contemporary service experience led by a praise band singing lots of celebration music.

In all three services the sermon is based on the same scriptures with a slight variation in style. We hope you will find that one of these three services enhances your sense of God's presence as you worship.

JESUS IN THE GOSPELS

Watch for sign up sheets starting in August and updates in the Cross & Flame and the Sunday bulletins.

We also offer some of the shorter term Disciple classes: Invitation to the Old Testament, Invitation to Romans, Invitation to Genesis, Invitation to the Psalms, Invitation to John, Invitation to the New Testament. These generally run 8 to 10 weeks in length.

Building Usage Guidelines - Building Usage Forms

Below are the current Building Usage Guidelines for all groups using or requesting to use space at Parker UMC. It is important that these guidelines be followed to continue using space here. If you have any questions, please contact the Church Office on 303 841-3979. A copy of these guidelines must be signed before rooms can be booked for your event.

June 14, 2010 MEMO TO: All persons leading or attending group meeting at PUMC. FROM: Trustees Subject: Policies governing the use of the church Our church has been using volunteers for house cleaning for over a year, and they are doing a fantastic job. But unfortunately, not everyone using the church is aware of it. This is evident because frequently our classrooms, kitchen and other areas in the church are left in a messy, dirty and overall unsightly condition. It’s obvious the individuals using the facility assumed that the janitorial staff would clean up after them. Well, this memo is to inform everyone that there are no janitors and therefore we are all responsible for cleaning up after ourselves. To this end the trustees are asking for your cooperation. We are asking each group leader to assume responsibility for their organization and see to it that before they leave the church, their area is spiffy clean and all furniture arranged according to the room’s photo. To help everyone make it a place we can all be proud of, the following guidelines are in effect immediately: a. All groups will perform a complete clean up of the areas they use. Trash must be removed from the building in bags or boxes and placed in the dumpster located on the northeast side of the church grounds. (Church sponsored classes, arts and craft sessions, worship/study groups and similar events need not take trash to the dumpster; however, they are asked to clean up their area’s trash and place it in one of the large trash cans located throughout the church). The church will provide trash bags; they can be located on the baker’s rack in the kitchen. b. Refreshments will be removed from the church when the group’s event is finished. Please do not assume that someone else will use leftover food and drinks. EXCEPTION: pastry products may be left in the kitchen provided they are in a closed container. Coffee pots should be emptied and cleaned and power cords unplugged. Coffee and other drinks may be left in the kitchen if another group wishes to use it. In this case, the assuming group will be responsible for cleaning the containers used. c. Pizza boxes are considered trash because they always have food particles stuck inside. Do not place them in the re-cycle container; instead, put them in the dumpster outside. d. Coffee grounds are to be placed in a trash container. Never “dump” grounds in the sink or disposal drains. e. Do not leave dishes and silverware in the sink. They should either be hand washed, dried and put away or placed in the dishwasher. f. Children must be under the supervision of an adult at all times. They should never be allowed to play anywhere in the church unless an adult is present. g. Wheelchairs are placed in the church for the benefit of the disabled. Please do not allow children to play with them. h. When changing the configuration of an area because it is necessary to accommodate the group’s activity, the area should be reconfigured when the group’s event is finished. (Refer to room’s photo) If movement of tables and chairs is necessary, please ask for church assistance. If the group takes responsibility for setting up tables and chairs, always insure that chains on the table rack are connected and snug before moving. This is to prevent serious injury to those involved. i. All groups must restrict their activity to the room(s) assigned. j. Several groups have participants who are transported to and from the event; it is the group’s responsibility to insure that a supervisor is in the church when participants arrive and remain in the church until all participants have departed. Parker United Methodist Church considers it very important that we accommodate our community’s need for a high quality, pleasant place for prayer, worship, fellowship, study, education, reflection, entertainment and all other needs of God’s people, but we need everyone’s help in doing so. Please help us maintain this house as you would your own. Thank you. Group Name: _________________________________________________ Group Leader: ________________________________________________ Date Memo Provided to Group Leader: _____________________________ Parker UMC Staff Liaison: ________________________________________ Parker United Methodist Church 11805 S. Rev. Mike Nickerson, PhD.
Email
My wife, Ti (pronounced TEE), and I have really enjoyed serving here since we arrived June 1, 2000. There are so many dedicated and loving people who come together to minister in the name of our Lord here in Parker and around the world. We have people involved in Parker Task Force and Food bank and people who are involved in ministry on the other side of the world in Cambodia. I have served churches in Michigan and Arizona and have been the president of one of our United Methodist seminaries. Being a pastor at Parker UMC is one of the most rewarding ministries of my life. I hope you will join us for prayer, worship, and service here at Parker UMC.

LEAVING YOUR CHILD IN THE NURSERY - Nursery

1. Please label your child's diaper bags or any other belongings at the table that's located at the entrance of the nursery. A nursery staff member will fill out a nametag at the counter with a corresponding pager number and any other important information.

2. Please be assured that a staff member will page you if your child has been crying for 10 minutes. If you want to be paged sooner or later please let an adult staff member know.

3. For any first time visitor or any guardian who has a child with separation anxiety please feel free to accompany your child into the nursery.

4. If your child has any allergies or special needs please notify an adult staff member. Nursery only provides goldfish, cheerios, and fruit loops to children for snack.

5. At our PUMC Nursery we strive to provide a healthy environment for your child. In order to do so, please do not bring your child in if they have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea within the previous 24 hours, any symptoms of childhood disease such as scarlet fever, measles, mumps, chicken pox, and whooping cough, runny nose with any colored discharge, sore throat until 24 hours after treatment, any unexplained rash, skin infection, pink eye or other eye infection, and head lice.

6. All classes have an end time and nursery expects that a guardian should arrive to pick their child up within ten minutes after the class end time.

7. During pick up time an adult staff member will not dismiss a child until the corresponding pager is returned for safety reasons.

8. Children need to arrive at the nursery with clean hands, face, and clean diapers. This is needed to maintain a healthy environment.

9. All members of all classes who use the nursery should include the Nursery Childcare Minister on their class email list for any changes or cancellations in the meeting times.

10. If you are in a class and your child becomes ill or for some reason you cannot attend your class please immediately call or email the Nursery Childcare Minister.

Every September and January we are asking that each family who uses the nursery and childcare at anytime other than Sunday morning worship fills out a registration form and corresponding registration fee (fee payment information is on the registration form).

CHECK OUT OUR PRETEEN GROUP!!!

This is a fun and exciting group for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders! Through September to April we meet twice a month on Friday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00. Usually during the summer we meet once a month for BBQ and volleyball. During our meetings we start with some yummy dinner and then move on to discussion time. This is a time that the preteens are able to ask questions and get help with anything that is bothering them. We also talk about stories in the bible and start to learn about God's love and grace for each one of us. After discussion we have anything from games and crafts to creepy crawly visitors! Friends are always welcome to come!! If you have any questions about our group please contact Julianna at julianna@parkerumc.org.

Mission of the Month - "Mission of the Month"

Each Month Parker UMC highlights a Mission of the Month. The list is updated each year in November or December, so if you have a passion for a particular mission or ministry, you can submit it to the Missions Committee, Frank Hill and Shari Quackenbush - co chairs. To be on the list, there must be an advocate for that mission who coordinates the monthly activities: there is a speaker who introduces the Mission on the last Sunday of the preceding month, and update the Mission Bulletin Board and Kiosk.

All funds designated to a Mission goes directly to that Mission. No General Budget Funds are used to support Missions.

In 2010 our Missions of the Month are below. Click on each for a description or some current Information.

January: Missionaries and Wycliff Bible Translators Kim & Dusty Hill

February: DENUM Food Bank

March: Heifer Project

April: Russia initiative

May - December - will be confirmed at the next Mission Meeting, which is the 1st Wednesday of each Month.

We continually collect aluminum cans at Parker UMC and donate the money to Habitat for Humanity. You can drop off your soda cans in the bin outside of the kitchen.

Aluminum Cans that you bring to the church support our efforts with Habitat for Humanity. We've realized about $50.00 per month which has been used for supplies when members of PUMC have participated in Habitat in other communities. Your donations will be helpful

WHAT IS EQUAL EXCHANGE?
Equal Exchange was founded in 1986 to create a new approach to trade, one that includes informed consumers, honest and fair trade relationships and cooperative principles. As a worker-owned co-op, we have accomplished this by offering consumers fairly traded gourmet coffee direct from small-scale farmer co-ops in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
You can purchase Equal Exchange coffee at Parker UMC on Sundays and through out the week that supports our mission efforts throughout South America.

 																			A Prayer for Elementary Students
Father of all mercies
We ask that you would bless
the youngest and littlest of learners,
the most helpless and powerless of persons,
with Your infinite and loving mercy,
granting them the strength to learn, concentrate,
and act appropriately towards their teachers and fellow students.
We also ask that You would watch over them,
at home and at school
and grant them proper direction so that they may learn
of Your wonderful virtues.
We ask this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen

David Bennett

A Prayer to Start the Day
O, God,
Grant us in all our duties your help;
in all our perplexities, your guidance;
in all our dangers, your protection;
and in all our sorrows, your peace.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
our body, and our blood,
our life and our nourishment. Amen.
St. Augustine (354-430

Prayer For Beginning a New School Year
Father,
We thank you for a chance
to begin the 2009-2010 school year,
and we ask that you bless
the faculty, the students, and student families.
We pray that you will guide us in all ways,
and that we will seek your will
in everything that we do.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Taize Worship Service - 2010 Prayer Ministry Team

Welcome to Taize’You enter the Sanctuary in a spirit of worship and tranquility. The only light comes from the candles and the Cross.
You take your seat and participate in a reflective, worshipful experience of Scripture Readings, Prayer, Simple Christian Songs and Silent Reflection.
Prayer is our way to communicate with and commune with God.
The songs are simple melodies, meditative in nature and easy to sing, and are accompanied by an instrument such as a flute.
In the silent time, we listen and are present with God. Just as we spend time with our best friend, so we wait upon the Lord.
About Taize’ Taize’ is the name of the village in France where the Brothers of an ecumenical community reside. Since the late 1950’s, young adults have been gathering on the hillside of this little village – gathering to meet one another, to pray and to discover how they can be messengers of hope and reconciliation in their own life situations. Persons who have spent time living and praying with the Taize’ community in France have found inner peace and calm in this style of worship. Taize’ worship involves the repetition of simple Christian phrases and nourishes us on a deep non-verbal level. The service consists of quiet chanting, a psalm, a reading from Scripture, silence and prayer. The prayer time provides time for us to speak the particular needs of our world and of our own needs. It allows us to bring our burdens and the burdens of our world, committing to Jesus all that is in our hearts. Songs ~ The songs of Taize’ are easy to sing. These simple melodies enable us to keep on praying when we are alone, by night and by day, sometimes in the silence our hearts when we are at work. Accompanied by such instruments as guitar, cello, flute and oboe, the short repeated chants give a meditative character. Scripture ~ The service will include a ten minute period of silence. In silence we listen, we are present to God. Just as we spend time with our best friend, so we wait upon the Lord. Silence allows God to transform us more in the image of Christ. Prayer ~ Prayer is simply communication/communion with God. It doesn’t have to be fancy or poetic. It doesn’t have to be in the King James English (“Thou, O Lord, are...”). It doesn’t even have to employ words. When you are conscious of being in the presence of God, you are in prayer. Parker UMC holds several Taize worship services each year: Ash Wednesday, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, on the National Day of Prayer, and during the Summer for "back to school."

I am very pleased to be part of the staff at Parker UMC and I look forward to meeting you and your family. My husband Ed and I have been members for 25 years and we are amazed at the growth and the many opportunities for people moving to the Parker area. We lived in Parker for 16+ years in the Pinery, and 9 years ago we bought some acreage out on the eastern plains in Kiowa. There we operate a small cattle business and have recently added some miniature herefords to our herd. We have 1 dog, Miss Blu, and inside and outside cats. Our daughter & son-in-law live close by in the Pinery. I hope that you will find Parker UMC a welcoming place for you to worship ,enrich your faith walk, and grow through the many programs offered here. If there is any way that the office can help you, just stop by and say "Hi" or give us a call.

Our 8:00am Worship uses a traditional liturgy with traditional hymns and music led by our Choir to help us center our worship experience. Children are encouraged to participate in the Children's Church after the Children's Sermon during this service.

Our 9:30 am Worship is more informal with the same hymns as the 8:00 am Worship and fewer parts of the regular United Methodist liturgy. This worship has a variety of musical styles led by our Choir.

Our 11:00am Worship is a contemporary service experience led by a praise band singing lots of celebration music.

In the 8am & 9:30am services the sermon is based on the same scriptures with a slight variation in style. The 11am service is more interactive. We hope you will find that one of these three services enhances your sense of God's presence as you worship.

COMMUNION SERVICES Are the 1st Sunday of each month at all 3 services except for our Summer Schedule in June & July, when it falls on the 2nd Sunday. On every Sunday except for the Monthly Communion Sundays, we have Communion at 9:10am in the Fellowship Hall

Joyful Noise...

provides meaningful children's fellowship through music, art, and drama. The children will enjoy a great variety of activities each Wednesday afternoon learning about our wonderful God through the many avenues of the Arts. Each child will enjoy time singing, snacking, acting, and making crafts to share with his or her family.

The Joyful Noise staff is composed of very experienced and energetic trained musicians as well as professional educators who are very dedicated to God's precious children. There is no greater gift than that of a child. The Parker UMC Joyful Noise staff welcomes each one to share in the experience of making true "joyful noise" to praise our most gracious God.
